Abstract : To study the heat transfer from a nitrogen arc in cross-flow, the arc is represented by a solid cylinder. Results obtained by assuming the nitrogen within the cylinder to be (1) a transparent gas, (2) a grey gas, and (3) a gas which emits radiation only at the surface of the cylinder are compared. A temperature profile for the grey-gas model was found to differ but slightly from that for the transparent-gas model. The study shows that if the cross-flow rate, the electric field strength, and the arc current are known, the arc radius, the centerline temperature and the peripheral temperature can be calculated. Graphs relating these parameters are given for a nitrogen arc over a wide range of conditions. (Author)
