Abstract : Gamma ray spectrometers were used to measure the concentrations of radioactive isotopes in dilute solutions. Their sensitivity for detection of CS137 in the ocean is about one picocurie per liter. In rivers serving nuclear reactors concentrations of less than 10 picocuries per liter of artificial radioactive isotopes were measured against a natural background of more than 100 picocuries per liter.
