Abstract : Dental examinations, both clinical and radiographic, were performed for 5,298 apparently healthy adult males who had enlisted recently in the U. S. Air Force. Geographically this sample was a completely random one with subjects coming from every portion of the United States. Excluded from the sample, however, were those recruits who presented less than 20 teeth. Third molars also were excluded from the analysis. Under these conditions the dental status of the average enlistee could be expressed as follows: number of teeth present, 26.7; carious teeth, 6.8; carious surfaces, 11.2; filled teeth, 6.5; filled surfaces, 12.8; and DMFS rate, 27.9.
