Abstract : The deformation theory of plasticity is used to determine the plastic stresses and strains in a ring-stiffened cylindrical shell subjected to external hydrostatic pressure. Strain-hardening of materials is taken into account. The plastic solution reduces to the elastic solution of Salerno and Pulos when the plastic modulus and the plastic Poisson's ratio are set equal to their corresponding elastic values. Strains determined by this theory agree well with experimental strains in the circumferential direction but are less than experimental strains in the longitudinal direction. (Author)
