Abstract : The magnetic susceptibilities of the compounds R1/2Na1/2MoO4, with R = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb, were measured between 2K and 300K for spherical, single crystalline samples. The compounds are paramagnetic and show large, axial anisotropy at low temperatures. The magnetic susceptibilities of samarium and europium gallium garnets (R3Ga5O12, with R = Sm and Eu) were measured between 2K and 300K. The magnetic susceptibility of polycrystalline Eu3O4, which is isomorphous with orthorhombic calcium ferrite has a peak at 5K which is ascribed to antiferromagnetic ordering. However, the magnetic susceptibility above 20K indicates predominantly ferromagnetic interactions. A simple model, consistent with this result involves ferromagnetic chains of spins, polarized along the c axis, with neighboring chains antiferromagnetically arranged. Measurements on single crystalline fragments show that the compound undergoes a metamagnetic transition at a critical field Hc along the c axis. (Author)
