Abstract : The report presents wind-shear data for three areas of the Air Force Western Test Range (AFWTR) and turbulence data, which are applicable to AFWTR, for portions of the Northern Hemisphere. A method is described and used for estimating the means and standard deviations of wind shears for smaller layers using wind-shear data measured through thicker layers. Estimates of turbulence frequency and intensity are presented based upon the relationship between wind shear and turbulence. Mean wind shear and wind shear variability maxima occur at approximately 40,000, 55,000, 130,000, and 220,000 feet with minima at 100,000 and 150,000 feet. Turbulence frequency and intensity maxima occur near 30,000, 130,000, and 220,000 feet with minima near 45,000, 120,000, and 150,000 feet. (Author)
