Abstract : Measurements on the stress-strain relation in muscovite mica indicate that dislocations are mobile even at very low stress levels at room temperature. Irradiation with gamma-rays to 10 to the 7th power R did help to pin the dislocations but not completely. Etch pit studies indicate that it is the dislocations which lie and operate entirely in the (001) plane, dominate the mechanical properties of mica at low stress levels. Detailed x-ray crystal structure analysis of IM Fluorophlogopite is in progress. (Author)
