Abstract : Amounts of beryllium as small as 4 x 10 to the -13th power g can be detected by electron capture gas chromatography of beryllium(II) trifluoroacetylacetonate. Calibration curves were obtained over the range from 8 x 10 to the -13th power to 4 x 10 to the -11th power g of beryllium. A quantitative method for the determination of beryllium in aqueous solution by solvent extraction, followed by gas chromatography, is described. Radioactive Be7 was used to determine the distribution of beryllium between the organic and aqueous phases in the solvent extraction step and to establish whether traces of beryllium were lost by adsorption. Comparative studies of the response of the electron capture detector for aluminum(III) and chromium(III) trifluoroacetylacetonates and heptafluorodimethyloctanedionates were made. The detector response is approximately three times greater for the trifluoroacetylacetonates as compared to the heptafluorodimethyloctanedionates. The gas chromatographic analysis of rare earth metal tetramethylheptanedionates was initiated. Partial separation of the yttrium and europium tetramethylheptanedionates was achieved. (Author)
