Abstract : The report presents improved experimental procedures for ultrasonic spectroscopy which make it possible either to compare the spectra of two ultrasonic echo signals or to obtain a curve representing differences in the spectral amplitude distribution of these signals. It is shown that the differential method can be used to distinguish two defects from each other which, although differing in size, produce indications of identical height in an ordinary pulse-echo test. It is further shown that the new spectroscopic technique can be used to determine differences in the microstructure of materials if these differences affect the attenuation of ultrasound. (Author)
