Abstract : Pictorial displays and course-line computers, driven by VORTAC receivers, were tested to appraise the value of area navigation in the Air Traffic Control System. Technical and operational aspects were tested in fixed-wing aircraft and by simulation in the laboratory. The report touches on results from simulation but concentrates on the description of flight tests. From Air Traffic Control simulations, it was concluded that the controller workload may be reduced and his ability to manipulate traffic increased. Flight tests proved that the addition of area displays to VORTAC receivers enhances the usefulness of DME in VORTAC. Off-radial flight accuracies are comparable to the now existing radial accuracies.
