Abstract : An investigation was conducted to determine the relationship between adhesive wetting and adhesion to certain adherends. The degree of wetting was determined by measuring contact angles with a contact angle goniometer. The effects on contact angles of changing the surface treatment of the polyethylene and aluminum specimens was studied. Next the angles were changed by varying the adherend itself rather than just the surface preparation. Polyethylene, aluminum, and glass laminate were used for the purpose. Finally, the liquid adhesives themselves were changed in order to vary wetting and determine whether or not a specific relationship exists between wetting and bond strength. Adhesives used were (1) Eastman 910, a cyanoacrylate adhesive; (2) Epon 828/Versamid 140, a polyamide-modified bisphenol A type epoxy; and (3) Kopoxite 159/Versamid 140, a polyamide-modified resorcinol-type epoxy.
