Abstract : Various refractory materials were examined with respect to their oxidation behaviour and reactivity with water vapor. The materials were initially chosen based on the criterion that they exist in solid form above 2000C. The substances include metals, intermetallics, borides, carbides, nitrides, single and mixed oxides, silicides, sulfides, phosphides, and oxysulfides. Two hundred fifty-eight materials are listed. Primary coating materials were chosen on the basis that each metal or compound: (1) existed in a solid state from 0C to greater than 2000C, (2) experienced no catastrophic oxidation in still air below 1700C, and (3) exhibited no observable reaction with water vapor. Nine materials satisfied these conditions: ThO2, HfO2, ZrO2, ZrSiO4, Cr2O3, WSi2, CaCr2O4, Ti2O3, and alpha-Al2O3. These are listed in the order of decreasing melting point with the exception of Ti2O3, whose quoted temperature is one of decomposition. Secondary coating materials totaling 34 were those for which insufficient data were available to be able to determine whether they could be acceptable coating materials. All other materials were found to have questionable suitability for use as coating materials under the conditions specified. (Author)
