Abstract : To meet the need for reliable quantitation of trace levels of D2O in water, a differential infrared spectrophotometric procedure was developed. Two technics are discussed: one emphasizing a cell in - cell out approach without provision for temperature equilibration of the sample; and a second approach exploiting the advantages of rigid temperature control for reference and sample. The two technics are compared in terms of precision and accuracy, the latter method being decidedly superior. Both approaches are based on measurement of the O-D stretch at 2,510/cm. and enable assay of added D2O levels down to below 50 p.p.m. (w/w). The basic approach appears to be applicable to the direct quantitation of low concentrations of D2O in biologic fluids without sample preprocessing. (Author)
