Abstract : A first order theory is developed to describe the motions of electrons and ions in a weakly ionized gas in the presence of a magnetic field, when the gas is disturbed by the passage of a low-frequency wave such as an internal gravity wave. The approximations used are believed to be compatible to the case of an internal gravity wave in the lower ionosphere. An illustrative example of the normal ionosphere at the 90 km level over Dobbs Ferry, New York, is used to emphasize the complexity of the problems involved. (Author)
