Abstract : The rate of the exothermic free radical reaction NF2 + F2 yields NF3 + F has been directly determined by measuring the disappearance of fluorine and the initial rate of NF3 formation in the temperature range 1100 to 1600K by means of a shock tube coupled to a TOF mass spectrometer. The Arrhenius expression ka = 4.8 x 10 to the 9th power exp (-14,400/RT)/M/sec is obtained for the rate constant which when extrapolated (approximately equals 10 to the seventh power) to near room temperature is in reasonable agreement with the corrected data. The dissociation of fluorine in neon was also studied in the temperature range 1400 to 2000K where kF2 = 2.0 x 10 to the tenth power exp (-35,000/RT)/M/sec is an Arrhenius fit to the data. (Author)
