Abstract : Research and development work is reported on a variety of cryotron problems including logical design of circuits, development of a photo-etching technique for constructing circuits, and techniques for interconnecting cryotrons on different substrates. Of particular interest was the construction of a logical network for squaring 10 bit binary numbers, having a capacity to give the 4 most significant places in the answer. This circuit contained 239 cryotrons on a 2 inch by 2 inch substrate and was constructed by a photo-etching technique. The second year of the contract was devoted to developing techniques for substrate interconnections. It was found that epoxy cement could be used to either bond glass substrates directly together or to bond a flexible mylar ribbon to the substrates. Circuits were constructed on a separate substrates and interconnected by evaporated superconductive lines across the epoxy bond. Further work on interconnection techniques was directed toward magnetic coupling of substrates by use of single turn transformers. The primary and secondary were constructed on separate substrates, with no ground plane under the transformer and with primary and secondary turns placed face to face with minimum separation. Very low inductance and excellent coupling were achieved. (Author)
