Abstract : A drawing room model of the S. S. CLAIRTON was made, representing the parts above the load water line plane. This was towed inverted in water with its center line at various angles with the direction of motion and the flat surface representing the L.W.L. plane just above the surface of the water. The model was fastened beneath a platform which was free to move horizontally, the size and direction of the force of the water tending to move the model (relative to the platform) being measured by the forces required to hold it in its original position. The model was run at speeds up to two knots and with its center line at angles with the direction of motion varying by 10 degree intervals from 0 degrees to 90 degrees. The forces of the water on the model having been determined, the ahead resistances were obtained by resolving these forces along the center line of the model, and the positions of the center of pressure by the intersections of the vectors representing these forces with the center line of the model.
