Abstract : Mechanical-hysteresis loops have been obtained for cycles of torsion applied to copper, brass, low-carbon steel, titanium. It is shown that the slope of the unloading line is determined by a plastic recovery p together with elastic recovery e, that p/e is virtually constant for a given amplitude of cyclic twist, that p/e changes systematically with amplitude, and that p/e leads to an effective shear modulus that decreases with increasing amplitude in a specific way for the different metals. It is also shown that the Bauschinger effect leads to yield of a special kind, where for example cyclic torsion and static tension in combination can lead to a non-linear stress/strain relationship without leading to yield in the direction of tension.
