Abstract : The report concerns the synthesis of sulfur-bridged m-carborane polymers which were obtained from the novel m-B10H10C2(SCl)2. This bis-sulfenylchloride can be conveniently prepared by chlorination of m-B10H10C2(SH)2 and constitutes a desirable difunctional polymer intermediate because of the susceptibility of its chlorine atoms to nucleophilic displacement. Its conversion into polymeric sulfides, (-CB10H10C-S-)x, and disulfides, (-S-CB10H10C-S-)x, could be effected by a variety of means including condensation with m-B10H10C2Li2 and reaction with refluxing ethanol. In addition to the polymers obtained, several useful monomeric derivatives of m-B10H10C2(SCl)2, e.g. the bis-sulfonylchloride, m-B10H10C2(SO2Cl)2, were characterized. (Author)
