Abstract : In continuation of the efforts towards a general statistical evaluation of the available test data on several machine tools, eleven case reports concerning gear hobbing machines have been studied. The special characteristics of the gear hobbing process seem to allow a fairly simple specification for this class of machines. The improvements on the test rig for rotatory excitation of gear drives have been discussed and the design features and calibration characteristics of a new torque and displacement transducer are reported. Further description of circuitry and performance characteristics of some parts of the electronic apparatus devised for instantaneous measurement of transfer functions in general and cutting stiffness in particular are presented.
