Abstract : This report describes the development, characterization, and human factors evaluation of high visibility electroluminescent displays. Through the development of a greatly improved contrast filter technique and its combination with anti-reflection coatings, it is shown that daylight aircraft cockpit EL displays can be made. The importance of both specular and diffuse reflections are illustrated. A dramatic reduction in the display brightness required for the threshold of rapid readability has been achieved. Improving display visibility by use of high contrast rather than high brightness means that electrical power dissipation for the display can be reduced, and useful display life increased. (Author)
