Abstract : In the non-linear theory of one-dimensional motions of fluids exhbiting mechanical dissipation through the relaxation of internal state variables, one can derive exact expressions for the growth and attenuation of acceleration waves and higher-order waves. The methods and concepts used are simpler than those required for analogous problems in the general theory of materials with fading memory. Here we discuss in detail the time dependence of the amplitude of waves propagating into homogeneous regions at equilibrium. (Author)
