Abstract : A user presents his point of view of literature searching through the major searching services in the overall program of acquisitions for the engineering staff of the Air Force Aero Propulsion Laboratory. These major searching services include the Defense Documentation Center (DDC), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Science Information Exchange (SIE), and the National Referral Center (NRC). Procedures have been established within the laboratory for utilizing these searching services. These procedures include writing and submitting the requests for retrospective literature searches and interest profiles for current-awareness services as well as the subsequent acquisition of documents and information cited in the returns. The relative value of the returns from these searching services is described; the value of a search return is determined by its completeness, response time, format, accuracy, and availability of cited information.
