Abstract : A Grubin type inlet film thickness analysis including the full thermal effects is developed. The temperature distribution in the inlet region where the reverse flow exists is calculated by a repetitive forward and backward marching procedure. Results are obtained for wide ranges of loads, speeds and lubricant parameters. These cover extremely high speed ranges for which no results were available previously. The reduction of film thickness due to thermal effects is accounted by a thermal reduction factor, which is defined as the ratio of the actual film thickness to that calculated by isothermal theories. Design charts are presented in terms of the thermal reduction factors. A design procedure to calculate film thickness for high speed, heavily loaded contacts is developed and two numerical examples are included. (Author)
