Abstract : Through three-dimensional photoelasticity, stresses were determined in externally pressurized spheres with simulated hatches and windows representative of bathyscaph pressure vessel construction. Stresses were determined for various seat chamfer angles and material combinations. In addition, an exploratory study was made of the effect of friction upon the stresses in windows. A major result of the study is the indication that for hatch chamfer angles of 15 degrees or less no local reinforcement is required either in the sphere or in the hatch. No conclusions were reached concerning sphere design near a window since additional data on effects of friction are required before this problem can be resolved. (Author)
