Abstract : The general theory of the multiple scattering of acoustical waves by a random distribution of isotropic point scatterers is considered. Configurational averages are taken of the equations of multiple scattering and integral equations governing these configurational averages are obtained; the physical consequences of these equations are examined in detail. A complete theoretical picture is obtained of the propagation of the coherent and incoherent radiation and the connection between the coherent and incoherent contributions to the average sound intensity and current.
