Abstract : The development of a cathode-ray tube with excitation-time-dependent color for moving-target indication included studying various phosphors and phosphor combinations. Techniques for evaluating the cathode-ray characteristics of various phosphors and different methods of radar simulation were developed. Most of the phosphor work involved studying long decay phosphor systems, such as, manganese and rare-earth activated fluorides, copper activated sulfides, and rare-earth activated oxide phosphors. Mixed and cascaded screens were prepared using the most promising phosphors from the investigation. Because insufficient improvement was obtained from conventional phosphors and screening techniques, an electron-beam-barrier approach was tried. Various methods were attempted to introduce a layer of material opaque to electrons and transparent to UV and visible light between two phosphor layers. The barrier enabled utilization of the longer decay of ZnS:Cu when excited by UV light instead of cathode rays. The optimized tube exhibited excellent color contrast between fixed and moving targets for fast scan radar systems using more than six scans per second, but further development is needed for slower scan rates.
