Abstract : The report gives the results of experiments with a new type of pressure detector device. The pressure of a gas is inferred from the retarding torque which the gas produces on a spinning rotor. The speed of the rotor, when driven by a variable speed motor, varies with the physical state of the gas, so that the frequency or voltage output of a tachometer incorporated in the rotor design provides a measure of the pressure. Curves and data are given which show the following important features: Almost unlimited dynamic range - from -1/100 to over 10 atmospheres absolute pressure were measured in the first tests. High inherent accuracy over the entire range. High resolution and low drift. No hysteresis effects. Small temperature dependence, which may be easily compensated for. Inherent mechanical ruggedness and simplicity of design. (Author)
