Abstract : There is a considerable amount of literature on cathode ray tube phosphors for visual observation, but the use of cathode ray tubes with the various photodetectors such as vidicons, image orthicons, and photomultipliers has never been thoroughly covered. This report discusses the phosphor types commercially available and some of their capabilities and limitations. This report is composed of two parts: the first part is a summary of published data on phosphors and an explanation of the meaning of some of the parameters involved. The second part shows the results of experiments performed with the 'blue' family of phosphors. Some data is included on the spectral sensitivity of vidicons and photomultipliers so that suitable combinations can be chosen to design an integrated system.
