Abstract : A generalized model of a digital computer system with a workload drawn from a proffered infinite workload was investigated to determine the factors that affect throughput and cost effectiveness to allow optimization of the system parameters. Throughput was defined as the sum of the products of the cost of each component and the proportion of the time each component was beneficially used. Cost effectiveness was defined as the quotient of throughput and system cost, with unity being the ideal quotient.
