Abstract : The Jacobi method and the Householder method for finding the eigenvalues of a real symmetric matrix are discussed. Derivations, error analyses, and a brief history are given. Five variations of these two methods have been programmed for a digital computer. The numerical results of these programs have been used as a basis of comparison of these methods. (Author)
