Abstract : Paleomagnetism, a new and rapidly developing branch of geophysics, is the study of the history of the geomagnetic field on the basis of natural remanent rock magnetism. The present paper describes the results of a paleomagnetic research on Lower Carboniferous sedimentary rocks, the purpose of which was to establish the positions of the geomagnetic poles during the said geological period. The selection of orientated samples was made in the Minusinsk Basin region (southern part of the Krasnoyarsk Krai). The Lower Carboniferous is here represented by a complex of variegated rocks, known as the Minusinsk Suite. The thickness of the suite has been set at 1200-1500 m. The rock samples were selected according to established procedure (1, 2) from natural outcrops. The Lower Carboniferous sedimentary rocks were represented, in these outcrops, by red and grey sandstones and aleurolites. The remanent magnetization and the magnetic susceptibility of the samples were measured by means of an astatic magnetometer. (Author)
