Abstract : Internal position-like variables are derived for phonons, and for electrons in a crystalline lattice. The derivation proceeds by considering departures from translational invariance. The importance of such internal variables is discussed. Advice is given to experimentalists in the area of measuring the electron current dragged along by the mechanical shock.
