Abstract : A particular class of imaging systems which produces a visible two-dimensional image of an object scene emitting or reflecting radiation in the infrared spectral region is discussed. Systems in this class produce an electrical signal proportional to a linear combination of resolution element intensities. The weightings imposed on the resolution element intensities are determined by the transmittance of a reticle placed in the image plane of the system's primary focusing optics. Time-varying weightings result from translations of the reticle within the image plane. The well-known continuous mathematical model of this type of system is reviewed, and its limitations are discussed. Then an alternate mathematical model is presented. This model defines the object scene, the electrical signal, and the final image as finite-dimensional vectors. The coding and decoding operations of the reticles are represented by matrices which transform the vector spaces containing these vectors. Designing reticle patterns is reduced to the problem of finding matrices which satisfy requirements insuring that the reticles will be realizable and capable of imaging the object scene. These requirements are discussed, and certain types of matrices which satisfy them are presented. (Author)
