Abstract : Theories of stress wave propagation in solid elastic rods of constant and varying cross sections are reviewed. A duality principle is derived that relates the fluid horn case to the one dimensional solution for the solid horn. A new wave equation is derived for tapered rods that can include the effects of lateral inertia and shear. The special case of the conical rod is solved with the inclusion of lateral inertia. Predicted resonant frequencies of two finite length conical rods compared from 0.01 to 1.0% to experimentally measured values. (Author)
