Abstract : In this report the work on intermodulation protection reported in the Fifth Quarterly is generalized and applied to the basic frequency groups used in the synthesis procedure. A complete assignment is made to a radio relay system to illustrate the full synthesis procedure. An integrated treatment of the radio-net problem is presented along the lines of the radio-relay analysis included in the Fifth Quarterly. Rules for the prevention of interference, and a synthesis procedure for satisfying these rules are included. The a-m detector module of the Evaluation Model is revised to include the effect of inherent receiver noise in addition to the desired and interfering signals entering at the input terminals. The fm model output has been integrated and averaged over the baseband so that its answers also may be presented as a power signal-to-noise ratio for the complete baseband. Based on the signal-to-noise ratios determined from the models, a degradation index has been defined to measure the decrease in performance caused by the interfering signals. The requirement that a confidence statement be placed on the calculation of signal-to-noise ratio and/or degradation index has been met through the use of distribution-free methods of order statistics. A development of the technique and an example of its use are included. (Author)
