Abstract : An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of four levels of distracting noise upon the following speech variables: (a) words per minute; (b) relation of speech time to total time; (c) mean syllable duration; (d) mean speech intensity level above an arbitrary reference level. The subject's judgment of perceived loudness of the barrier signal also was investigated.
