Abstract : Spectral hole burning and cross-relaxation in neodymium-doped glass were investigated to determine whether stored energy can be removed rapidly by a spectrally narrow driving signal. By measuring the fluorescence from a pumped sample of glass before and after the passage of the signal pulse as a function of signal energy, quantitative estimates of cross-relaxation time and cross section for stimulated emission are made.
