Abstract : A method is presented for computing the stress distribution in a thin-walled structure by dividing the structure into finite elements, setting up plane stress equations for each element and solving these by an iterative procedure. Its merits are simplicity of application and economy of computer storage space and operation time. The method is applied to a simple plane stress problem and to a built-up structure. Its accuracy is tested by comparing results obtained for the plane stress problem with the known closed form solution, and by comparing together results obtained for the built-up structure using different element sizes.
