Abstract : Surface and 250 mb analyses for a 9-day summer period over the North Pacific, together with satellite photographs, are shown to illustrate (1) the development of a typhoon and a tropical storm from cyclonic cells in the tropical upper tropospheric trough, and (2) the dominance of the trough in producing tradewind weather.
