Abstract : The energy-dissipating characteristics of various types of lateral surface treatments on a cylindrical steel bar were investigated by observing the reduction in amplitude of compressional pulses propagated through the treated part of the bar. Typical results are presented for 15 different damping arrangements. These results indicate that the most effective damping is obtained by coating the bar with a visco-elastic material of high density. (Author)
