Abstract : The report describes a set of techniques which can be used to design and construct self-repairing digital systems with spare parts switching. Both the problem of fault detection and location and the problem of spare switching are discussed. Residue coding for arithmetic unit fault detection and location is discussed and rejected. Then, duplication techniques for both fault location and repair are discussed. A design plan is given for a demonstration model to demonstrate self-repair techniques. The design plan includes logic equations, timing diagrams, and a detailed operational description. Finally, recommendations are made for future efforts. (Author)
