Abstract : This paper considers cylindrical and spherical inclusions in an infinite homogeneous isotropic elastic medium under uniform tension. For the two dimensional inclusion, solution of the biharmonic equation leads to 'dual series' relations. For the analogous axisymmetric problem involving a spherical inclusion Boussinesq potentials are used, which lead to 'dual series' relations involving Legendre functions.
