Abstract : Studies were made of the acute and convalescent phases of viral hepatitis, both natural (IH) and post-transfusion (SH). These investigations emphasized needle biopsy of the liver, small bowel biopsy and L.E. cell tests. Eighteen cases of fulminant hepatitis with coma were studied. Six patients survived with conservative therapy. Three cases were treated by multiple exchange transfusion, all unsuccessfully. Convalescent (long term follow-up) studies disclosed a number of patients exhibiting a persistent lesion characterized by recurrent transaminase elevations and mild inflammation in the liver upon biopsy. One patient progressed within one year from acute hepatitis to advanced cirrhosis. (Author)
