Abstract : A class of airfoils with arbitrary chord and thickness taper ratios was considered in regard to natural frequencies in bending and torsion, flutter stability, classical divergence stability, and divergence amplification factors. All the charts presented are for thin, solid, double wedge airfoils; however, multiplying factors are given which make it possible to use the charts for airfoils with parabolic cross section (or to a good approximation, biconvex airfoils). The charts which apply to any such airfoil with elastic axis and center of gravity at the mid-chord are presented in such a manner that the designer should have no trouble in using them. If the airfoil is symmetrical but not solid, the charts for determining the aeroelastic properties are in general still valid, providing the appropriate stiffness and frequency parameters are determined. It was found that the critical region of the single degree of freedom torsion flutter mode is greatly reduced when bending flexibility was introduced. However, the region from which this flutter mode was eliminated may still be critical due to the presence of another flutter mode involving both bending and torsion. In fact, this is generally the case. (Author)
