Abstract : The method of asymptotic slopes is presented; spring-and-dashpot models may thus be determined to represent certain viscoelastic materials. Beginning with the assumption that the viscoelastic behavior to be studied is linear, and that inertial effects may be neglected, a mathematical model is proposed. The stress-strain relations, and hence the complex compliance of the model are shown to be of a special form. The resulting properties of the magnitude and angle of the logarithm of the complex compliance then lead directly to the method. When the procedure is successful, a generalized Voigt model can be written down immediately. Two sets of data for polyisobutylene provide examples of the described analysis. (Author)
