Abstract : Since the discovery of the low energy (of about 0.5 MeV) protons trapped in the geomagnetic field, several measurements have been reported on the intensities, angular distributions, energy spectra, and time variations of such protons. The present investigation extends the measurements to high latitudes (about 80 degrees) and low L values (L approximately = or > 1.1) with data obtained from the University of Iowa polar-orbiting Injun IV satellite. Constant intensity contours in absolute value of B - L space are presented for protons in the energy intervals 0.52 = or < Ep = or < 4 MeV and 0.90 = or < Ep = or < 1.8 MeV. The energy spectrum parameter Eo is computed as a function of L and it is shown that a major departure from the Eo proportional to 1/L cubed law is found for L approximately = or < 3.5 at absolute value of B = 0.19 gauss. Data are presented on the redistribution of protons in the radiation zones following the 17 April 1965 magnetic storm.
