Abstract : The paper presents an entirely new method and a practical machine design for making lay-reversed telephone cables. A key feature of this method is that two steps of stranding speed are applied to a stranding cradle alternately, while the cradle keeps rotating at a constant speed in one direction. As a result, a lay-reversed strand is obtained, turning the lay direction at every span of the accumulated length in the cradle. Two steps of stranding speed are generated by oscillating a set of dancing rollers which is placed between the cradle and the capstan. Every turning point of the lay direction of a quad is thinly coated with a bond in order to prevent the lay structure from becoming misshaped. Considering all cable characteristics, no significant differences between lay-reversed cable and other conventional cable have been found. The new stranding technique effective for tandemizing several successive processes, e.g. the quadding operation with the stranding operation. The quadding strander which is comprised of 26 quadding cradles, a stranding cradle and an oscillating dancer has been put into operation and being used for the production of a 50 pair sub-unit of No. 26 and No. 28 AWG expanded polyethylene-insulated telephone cable.
