Abstract : Results of a study of machine tool vibrations are given. A computer-programmed regression analysis is used with multi-variable cutting experiments to show the relative effects on vibration of the machine tool, the workpiece, and other cutting conditions. A system of instrumentation with accelerometers, amplifiers, tape recorder, and spectrum analyzer is described for obtaining spectral vibration data for computer analysis. Certain non-chatter vibrations are shown to be independent of machine tool dynamics. Correlation of vibration with surface finish is discussed. The shortcomings of standard surface finish measurement techniques for obtaining necessary data is denonstrated. Design of an experimental, non-contact, surface finish pickup, based on an electrometer principle is described. (Author)
