Abstract : The primary production in the water of the Indian Ocean from October to April 1960-1961 was determined by Carbon 14 method. After the introduction of NaHC14O3, samples of phytoplankton taken from various depths by the vinistratified bathometer were held for half a day in natural lighting conditions in a barrel with running sea surface water. When calculating the production for various depths, a correction characterizing the dependence of photosynthesis from illumination was introduced. In order to determine the correction in various ocean areas, special tests were conducted by which we determined the primary production in water samples containing the same quantity of algae but kept at various depths in the sea. Mixed artificial cultures of algae consisting of diatoms and flagellates were used for the tests. The use of these cultures was necessary for the reason that at many stations in the Indian Ocean the cells of algae were to rarified during the time of investigation that it was impossible to concentrate them. In such cases, mainly zooplankton was obtained, which hinders the determination of primary production in water samples by using the method of radioactive carbon. (Author)
